Gonzales, LA – On Friday, March 13, 2020, City of Gonzales Mayor Barney Arceneaux, the City of Gonzales Council, Fire Chief Tracey Normand, Police Chief Sherman Jackson, and members of the City’s administration, met to discuss the latest on the COVID-19 virus as a way to ease the concerns of area residents.

“City Hall, the Police Department, and the Fire Department are all going above and beyond to keep areas sanitized and safe,” said Mayor Arceneaux. “We are also in constant communication with GOSHEP, Ascension OHSEP, and the Department of Health, and are taking updates and advice seriously.”

The City’s main goal is to be proactive and prepared in an effort to ease community concern.

“Listening to reputable media and federal, state, and local departments is the best way to keep some normalcy in everyone’s lives,” said Police Chief Sherman Jackson. “There are scams popping up daily, that are attempting to con people who are already anxious. We urge people to reach out to us if they’re unsure of something.”

One such scam is an email circulating that asks people to click on a link in order to see cases in their general area. Once the link, corona-virus-map{dot}com is clicked, a Malware Virus deletes all information from your device.

Fire Chief Tracey Normand says that being vigilant with hygiene is a must at this time.

“Washing your hands for a minimum of twenty seconds is imperative to fighting off germs and bacteria associated a virus,” said Normand. “We’re not only washing our hands, but also taking extra care in cleaning our ambulances and equipment.”

And what of social distancing? This new term has been banded about in the wake of COVID-19 coming to America. Mayor Arceneaux explains the importance.

“Right now, people need to avoid crowds,” said Mayor Arceneaux. “Social distancing, or staying home when it’s not necessary to be out, is proving to be a very effective tool.”

The City of Gonzales will be updating residents when information comes in that is pertinent to their safety and well-bring.

“As we hear informational updates, so will our residents,” said Mayor Arceneaux. “The safety of our community is our ultimate goal.”
