Gonzales, LA – Residents of Gonzales will soon see a significant decrease in flood insurance premiums as part of a concerted effort to improve flood insurance awareness and participation in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
This year’s highlight is that the City of Gonzales moved up on the CRS Classification scale from a Class 8 to a Class 7. The change in classification has initiated a 5 percent increase in savings on NFIP flood insurance premiums. Beginning in October 2025, those with flood insurance through the NFIP in the City of Gonzales will receive a total of 15 percent savings on their premiums.
“As your mayor, I am committed to protecting our community from the devastating impact of flooding. Raising awareness about flood risks and ensuring that every resident understands the importance of flood preparedness is a top priority. Equally important, we must work diligently to lower flood insurance costs, making it more affordable for our families and businesses to stay protected. By focusing on these issues, we are taking proactive steps to secure a safer, more resilient future for our city,” says Mayor Tim Riley.
These changes come on the heels of a robust community outreach effort that includes social media campaigns, direct engagement, and helping homeowners better understand their flood insurance options.
The City of Gonzales utilizes the “Greenie the Frog” outreach campaign, which educates children on flood prevention through school programs and public events. The City shares updates on public engagement at local events, such as Ascension Day at the Capitol and back-to-school youth events to spread flood awareness messages. Additionally, City staff routinely visit elementary schools in Gonzales with Greenie Gonzales to educate kids on the dangers of flood water. The City of Gonzales is also working on new retention ponds and drainage projects in partnership with Ascension Parish.
