Lifesaving Commendation for GPD’s Scharwath

On Thursday (9/4/25), officers of Squad One were dispatched to the intersection of South Burnside Avenue and West Constitution Street in reference to a motor vehicle crash involving a motorcycle, the operator having suffered a broken leg.

Upon arrival, Officer Johnathan Scharwath quickly assessed the situation and observed the operator of the motorcycle laying in the grass adjacent to the roadway, suffering from a major traumatic injury to his lower right leg. Officer Scharwath quickly applied a tourniquet and spoke with the victim, keeping him calm until Gonzales Fire Rescue arrived on scene.

Officer Scharwath demonstrated the ability to effectively manage stress while maintaining composure and was able to provide medical aid to a victim of a motor vehicle crash. His swift, coordinated and professional efforts exemplify the highest standards of the Gonzales Police Department.
